CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

CASH

I spin around at the sound of knocking on my door. I stalk over and yank it open, coming up short when I see it’s Stuart, not Layla like I had hoped.

“Not a good time,” I grunt out, still pissed.

“I think you need to keep a closer eye on Layla,” he blurts out.

“Fuck you, Stuart. You have no clue what’s going on. Do I need to remind you that you work for me, not the other way around?”

“I saw the camera feeds. I’m not talking about watching her because you don’t trust her. I’m talking about watching her because I just stopped her from taking a swan dive off her balcony.”

“What?” Shock scrambles my brain for a minute as I move to pass by him, but he grips my arm.

“Don’t. She’s alright, and she isn’t going to do anything right now, but you should watch her for signs that she might be struggling. She figured out that the bullet in the park was likely meant for her. She feels responsible for the little boy’s mother’s death and she’s worried that you or Lily might get caught in the crossfire.”

“How do you know all this?”

“I asked her after I apologized for being an asshole.”

That has me shutting my mouth in surprise. Stuart rarely apologizes for anything.

“I owe you an apology too.”

I wave him off. “You got Lily to safety. I might be pissed that you didn’t drag Layla out by her hair if you had to, but I can’t be mad that you did your job.”

“Well then, maybe my job should change to encompass more. Or better yet, assign Mack to be Layla’s personal guard. That way, if a situation occurs and I need to focus solely on Lily, Mack will be there to focus just on Layla.”

At the moment, all the guards are told that Lily is priority number one. While that is true, she’s not my only priority anymore.

“Do it,” I agree.

I scrub a hand over my face and walk over to the window, looking out at the same view Layla can see from the floor above.

“She sees herself as a liability. She will do anything to keep you and Lily safe. Don’t underestimate her need to protect you. You should have seen her at the park when she covered those babies with her tiny body. I…” His voice drifts off as he sniffs and I look over to see the look of remorse on his face.

“My point is, she has nothing left to fight for.”

I lift my hand to make him stop. “She does now. I get it, Stuart, okay? You’re weren’t the only one who fucked up where Layla’s concerned. We all did damage. I’m just hoping we can fix what we broke. Perhaps she just needs to see she has people in her corner. God knows she’s been alone for long enough.”
