There must have been some truth to Miles’s comment that all the boys adored Sabrina, because when she’d called Jackson and asked to meet at Magic Beans for a coffee, he’d readily agreed and hadn’t asked any questions.

She’d been a little more than friendly, but even so, I would have assumed at least a few inquiries, like: why now? Or does this have something to do with the case?

From the one side of the conversation that I’d heard, she’d basically asked him to coffee in a mildly flirtatious tone, and he’d agreed.

But he wasn’t available until the following morning, so we’d been left in an agony of anticipation…for all of about half an hour before we’d crashed liked the exhausted, traumatized (in my case) investigators that we were.

And here was a fun fact: we all slept in Bastian’s room.

It was a good-sized guest room. Delilah’s house was basically a mansion, after all. And it was a sound strategy given that someone had to be awake at any given time, we all needed to sleep, and Bastian wasn’t mobile.

We worked out a rotation that no one adhered to, a fact I only discovered after waking the next morning feeling refreshed from a full night’s rest.

Another fun fact? I’d slept in Bastian’s bed. Granted, so had Great-Aunt Sophia—it was a king-sized bed—but it was still just a little freaky to be crashed out in bed sort of next to the man you have a massive (but very grown-up) crush on.

Another more than fun fact: When I finally managed to focus my bleary gaze on waking, I discovered a pair of familiar blue eyes belonging to a very confused German wizard staring back at me.

“You’re awake.” I was particularly clever in the morning before I’d consumed any form of caffeine.

“Where am I?” He blinked sleepy, dazed eyes at me.

Propping myself up on an elbow, because there was only so much early morning intimacy a girl could take, I replied, “Delilah’s house. You were bitten by a demon, which I guess knocks you out.”

I guess. I was an idiot. Based on firsthand evidence and all resources available to us, a demon bite definitely knocked out the victim.

“You’ve been out since Sunday between five or six,” my great-aunt, who was not in bed with us, said. “It’s Monday morning, and this young lady has an appointment.”

She clasped my hand and literally dragged me to my feet. Probably just as well. I really didn’t need to be chatting with Bastian in my current, barely awake, pre-caffeine, somewhat euphoric state.

Probably more than somewhat euphoric, because…

He was okay. Bastian was awake, and he was okay.

And the next incredibly romantic word out of the man of my dreams’ mouth?

“Bathroom?” he asked, scanning the room for an en suite door.

Which was my cue to get my butt up and ready for Sabrina’s appointment with Jackson.

Bastian was fine, Miles was busy typing on his laptop (had he even slept?), Sabrina was peering over his shoulder, looking dressed and ready to go, and Great-Aunt Sophia was shooting me a knowing look.
