By the time Emily woke up, it was dark out. She glanced at her cell phone. It was four o’clock in the morning. There was no one nearby. The house was dark, the only noise was the nocturnal animals outside scurrying around to find the last bits of food before the sun came up. Emily swung her legs down off the couch, the pain from the stab wound searing through her body. She needed to take some pain medicine. Getting up, she limped to the kitchen, finding a glass that had been washed, draining on the side of the sink. She filled it with water and swallowed pills from her bag and then rested her hands against the sink for a minute looking out the window. A new wave of fatigue washed over her. She limped back to the couch, putting her feet back up, the pain dulling just a bit when she took the pressure off of it. As she lay on the couch listening to the animals outside, her mind floated first to Luca and then to Sarah. She wanted to say she was surprised about Luca, but she wasn’t. She turned her head to the side, almost feeling like she was able to feel his touch on her face, but then the memory of the way that he had turned against her when Emily had been accused of bribery ran through her. Emily shifted the other way, trying to get comfortable, hoping the pain pills would kick in quickly. In the dark of the house, she could see the outline of the bookcases, the shelves where the memories of Sarah’s life were held. Emily wanted to have the strength to get up and keep working on the case, but she was tired, so very tired.
