Mexico’s use of social media is among the most impressive in the world. For example, it boasts of some 40 million Facebook users, making it the fifth largest Facebook community in the world. And its Twitter penetration is the second highest in Latin America, with more than 1 out of 10 Mexicans routinely accessing Twitter (eMarketer Staff, 2014). The trend has been continuous, much like other countries that have seen a huge increase in Twitter use.

It will be interesting to see if social media users heed the call of Maná, the popular band from Guradalajara. In recent years, Maná has been making appearances at various political rallies in and outside Mexico. The band’s members do not shy away from talking about their nation’s government, its lack of transparency, and its overwhelming political corruption. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has often been the focus of their cries. For example, the band did not hold back when the president supported the dismissal of Carmen Aristegui, one of the country’s best-known news reporters.
