Chapter 10
Youâd think after a night weâd had this morning would have gone smoothly. Not so much. Ten thirty in the morning, Emmie came dancing out of her room in her leotard and tutu, demanding I take her to ballet.
âYour class isnât until tomorrow, short stuff. Go and change. We have a house to paint this afternoon, unless you want to go hang out with Marge.â I was distracted, trying to make a detailed list of all the furniture I had stacked up in my house. Hazel hadnât said anything about the disarray, but sheâd noticed. And it was time. Emmie had been living with me for a month now, and I needed to get this place in order.
âBut I want to go now!â She snapped her fingers in front of my face, and I dropped my notepad. I didnât know she knew how to do that, but in the moment, I wasnât impressed, only annoyed.
âLook, kid. You canât go now. Miss Lilyâs teaching a different class, and you have to wait until tomorrow.â
Call it stupidity or sleep deprivation, or whatever you like; it all had the same outcome. Emmie folded her arms, letting out a frustrated screech, and suddenly, I could see the faint outline of Miss Lily coming into focus in my dining room. I jumped to my feet. âStop. Right now!â Emmie blinked and just as suddenly as it started, Miss Lilyâs form faded away. Emmie shook her head and sat heavily on the floor, pale as a ghost.
Was that...slow motion teleportation? Emmie clutched her head in her hands with a groan and then jumped to her feet with a wince at the same time I did as Hazelâs words from last night echoed in my mind. I grabbed her shoulders and looked her square in the eye. âDid you send her back?â The urgency I felt was mirrored in Emmieâs face.
âI dunno! Oh my goodness, Uncle D! I just stopped it, but I didnât think of a place! Did I send her into the ocean?â Her voice screeched in panic. âDid I just kill Miss Lily?â
I didnât want to scare her, but I was just as freaked out as she was. Scooping her up, I ran for the jeep, plopping her in her car seat and starting the engine in almost the same heartbeat. âBuckle up!â I vaguely heard the click of her belt engaging as I squealed out of the driveway. The dance studio was only a few miles away, and I tossed my phone behind me. âCall Hazel and explain.â It was a lot to ask of a four year old, but I couldnât even begin to describe it the way she would be able to, and I was driving like a maniac, probably breaking a dozen laws already. I couldnât risk getting in a wreck.
âHazel?â Emmie was frantic as well, and I wished to God Iâd have had her put the phone on speaker. âI half blinked my dance teacher, but I stopped and she disappeared.
