Chapter Seventeen

GWEN

“I’m so glad you guys came,” Leonora says warmly as we stand by the long table full of food. Everyone has already eaten, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to be having a nap when Ellie and I get home later. God, the food is nothing short of amazing; not to mention there was enough to feed an army. Though most of the guys helped themselves to more than a couple of plates of food, Maverick included.

“Thank you for having us,” I reply with a smile. “I wasn’t sure what to expect, to be honest, but I’m having a lot of fun.”

“Good. I have to tell you, when Maverick told me he found someone he was interested in, I couldn’t have been happier, though I was a bit worried after the last one got her claws so deep into him.”

“Maverick told me about her,” I say with a shake of my head. “She sounds like a real piece of work.” I bite my lip and add, “And I promise I’m not with your son for the money.”

Leonora looks over at me and grins. “I know that, honey. If you were, I’d have known right away. Besides, most women wouldn’t want to go to a noisy carnival if they had access to Maverick and his money. That’s my first clue. Not to mention, if you were after money, you would have already hit him up for some, and you don’t seem that kind of girl.”

I relax. “He’s a good man, and most of the time, I honestly forget he’s so well known and wealthy. When he’s with us, he’s just plain Mav, and he and Ellie have a wonderful time.”

“You sound a bit surprised at that,” Leonora says gently. “I take it you haven’t had an easy time with Ellie and the people in your life.”

I’m quiet for a moment, unsure of how much to tell her, but I can’t seem to stop myself from unloading a little bit. Before I can stop the words, I tell her honestly, “My mother didn’t want either of us, but especially not Ellie. Ellie struggled when she was younger to understand the basic things, along with potty training. Mom had no time for it, so I helped as much as I could. I think she was almost eight or nine before she stopped wetting the bed every night.”

“When I went away to college I felt so guilty, but I thought since Ellie was older and could handle a lot of things on her own, it would be better. I went home as much as I could, or I would take her over to my place for a day or two, but I knew Ellie was struggling. My mother just didn’t care about her. The people she brought around Ellie were awful to her, and called her names and threw things at her.”

Leonora’s lips thin and she mutters, “Assholes.”

I nod. “I don’t know if Maverick mentioned it or not, but I was engaged before, and when my mother brought Ellie to me and told me she was my problem.
