CHAPTER FOURTEEN

" "What went wrong?”

“Nothing," he replied, "just wanted to give you an update." Ellie took a breath of relief and George continued, "Molly and Daisy have arrived in a safe place only known to me, Bo, and Harry. Daisy has possibly worked it out, but, most importantly, they’re safe."

Ellie looked at him in shock. "So why did you let me call Chantal?"

"Smoke screen in case anyone was listening on their end."

Ellie sat back. "So I guess I can't talk to them either?"

She looked so upset George gave her a quick hug. "Remember that phone I gave Daisy? You can call occasionally from different one-use phones. They’re in here." He handed Ellie a bag. "Keep them safe, and discard them after each call."

Ellie looked at him incredulously. "It may be overkill, Ellie, but I'll do what it takes to keep y'all safe."

Ellie nodded. "Is it a nice place?” She knew George wouldn't tell her where.

"It’s lovely, and Molly is going to have a blast."

Ellie nodded. "I'll call them when I get home."

George turned to her. "Not from the apartment, just in case it's bugged, unless Jeannie gives you the go- ahead."

Ellie shook her head. "This is all totally insane."

George nodded. "It may well be, but these people are dangerous and desperate, and I’m paranoid. They may not have the capabilities to track our calls and conversations, but I sure don’t want to take the risk when I have the technology to stop them. What did you learn from Matt Stevenson?" Ellie told him, and of their plans. "Sounds good to me. I'll set men to watch you discreetly."

Ellie nodded, knowing there was no point in arguing with him. She almost regretted contacting him but if it protected Molly it was worth it.

"I'll update the Lieutenant too."

She thanked him, as that saved her a step. "Where can I call Molly from?"

George looked at her. "Tell you what, call from your apartment. Just don't talk specifics. Wait an hour and I'll come and check with Jeannie for bugs. We can call it a sympathy visit."

Ellie nodded, happy to have a plan in place. Theo and George drove off after watching Ellie walk into the lobby of her building. She sighed at being treated like she was six, but knew George was only doing what he did to keep her safe. She did wonder if he was this way for all his clients.

Ellie enjoyed her shower and felt much better once she had clean clothes on. Jeannie had made some tea for her and she took it, smiling. "Thank you, Jeannie."

Jeannie nodded her thanks. "I won't get in your way, Ms. Brightwater. I'll just be here when you need my help. I used the guest room. I hope that was okay?"

Ellie put down her tea. "Call me Ellie, please, and that's totally fine. I guess you're used to doing odd assignments for George?"

Jeannie sat at the breakfast bar next to Ellie. "This is one of the more comfortable assignments. If I can help in any way, Ellie, just let me know.
