‘You won’t believe who called me last night while I was out walking the dogs.’

Karen Coetzee looked up from her newspaper. ‘I’m not even going to try to guess. Who was it?’

‘Spoilsport.’ He kissed her forehead. ‘Pedro Espinoza, you remember, the Spanish detective who solved Leo’s abduction mystery?’

‘Oh dear!’ She put the paper aside. ‘So this must have to do with Jenny Bishop and that means there are problems around. What is it this time?’

‘Nothing to worry about.’ He recounted part of his conversation with Espinoza. ‘All he wanted was an introduction to a good agency in Switzerland. It’s nothing to do with us, no need to worry. I scanned him the card from Franz Stenmark, at Huntzer, the guy who helped us with that banking cyber-attack in Zurich.’

Karen was a clever, intuitive woman with a successful career in journalism, reporting on social and educational inequalities in South Africa, prior to her break-up with Marius, when she gave up full-time work to move to the Delmas farmhouse with Abby. ‘I see,’ said thoughtfully, ‘and what else did you talk about?’

‘OK, sorry, mind-reader. It seems Jenny might be the victim of some kind of fraud. They’re going to Geneva this week to check some things out and they’ll let me know what happens.’

‘You mean they’ll call for help if they need it?’

‘I suppose so, but that’s what I do best, right?’
