CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
Laughter pushed out of Kanemaruâs throat, tight with tension. âI wish I knew.â
âWell, I have some theories,â Tezuka said, leaning back off the kotatsu. âJust before his assassination, the Marquis informed me about his suspicions.â
âSuspicions?â
Kanemaru bent closer, his left hand planted on the table. Drawing his saber would be too difficult, leaving the binoculars as the only viable weapon.
Above the mustache, Tezuka glowered. âHe told me there were unsettling rumors haunting the Imperial Palace like ghosts. Rumors involving General Araki.â
Lunging forward, Kanemaru grabbed the binoculars and swung them around. The metal smacked against Inspector Tezukaâs skull with a loud crack, sending him to the floor. Kanemaru bolted upright, knocking over the kotatsu, and drew his saber, filling the room with a metallic rasp. He heaved it back, ready to sink steel deep into the Tokko inspectorâs exposed throat.
The saber thrust downward, but Tezuka rolled out of the way. His gloved hand reached out and grabbed Kanemaru by the wrist. Twisting it, Tezuka sent the sword clattering to the floor, but Kanemaru still gripped the binoculars. Another gloved hand reached up and crashed into Kanemaruâs chest, toppling him over.
Panting, Tezuka fumbled inside his coat. Kanemaru lurched forward, grabbed the saber, and considered another charge. Too late. Inspector Tezuka had regained his balance and drew a pistol, aiming for a clear shot. Spinning on his heel, Kanemaru rushed toward the sliding door, burst through it, and pounded down the stairs, his cape whipping up behind him.
âStop!â Tezuka bellowed as the loud clap of a pistol shot burst behind him. A chunk was ripped out of the paper wall just in front of him, but Kanemaru didnât slow his pace. He tore out of the machiya where the one-yen taxi still idled.
Bundling into the cab, Kanemaru roared, âDrive! Now!â
The driver opened his mouth to protest, but the glinting saber silenced him. Putting the taxi into gear, he shot off, just as Tezuka ran outside, his pistol hanging impotently beside him. Sheathing his sword, Kanemaru realized he still held Tezukaâs binoculars. He almost laughed, but instead, he sank into the backseat with a trembling sigh, as the Fish Market, Tsukiji, and soon all of Tokyo molded into an amorphous blur.
