Too much dreaming in REM state to try and resolve the emotional arousal. This eats into slow-wave sleep, which deprives the body of the restorative neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine.
During REM, the orientation response is fired off extensively. Someone who is depressed will dream about three times as much as someone who isn’t.
Person wakes feeling exhausted and lacking in interest or motivation. They feel tired, and dominated by their emotional brain, and the cycle of worrying thoughts continues.
Intervene in the cycle of depression by calming the mind: Now you understand what causes depression, you can also see how the cycle can be broken. Any treatment that helps to calm negative rumination cuts excessive REM and increases slow-wave restorative sleep; this leads to increased energy and motivation on waking in the morning. EFT, Matrix Reimprinting, calming hypnosis, meditation, stabilizing blood sugars and making sure that basic needs are met will all help to calm a ruminating mind.
