Chapter 18
Petrovsky District, Donetsk
âNo sign of our mutual friend,â Racine stated as they passed Wellerâs MG.
Snow felt in his pocket; he still had the car keys. âI wonder where heâs gone.â
Racine cleaned the last of the blood and grime from her face with a wet wipe, found in the glove box, âPerhaps he took my advice and went to the beauty salon.â
âPerhaps.â Snow noticed something ahead. âBugger.â
âBugger.â Racine rolled her eyes; it had been one of the first British swearwords sheâd been taught.
âUp ahead, ten oâclock. Thatâs the man you stole our ride from.â
âI see him ⦠and the Russian troops heâs with.â
âHang on, they havenât made us yet.â Snow slewed the Mitsubishi to the right, shot down a side street, and turned left behind an apartment block.
âThis means weâll have to ditch our ride sooner rather than later.â
âAgreed,â Snow said.
Snow continued to drive along the smaller road that ran parallel to the one watched by the Russians.
Racine noticed people standing at a bus stop. âHave you seen any cars?â
Snow scanned the street. âNo.â
âExactly. They seem a bit thin on the ground here, and the Russians are watching the road.â
âSo?â
âWhatâs that over there?â
âA bus stop.â
âWe hide in plain sight ⦠we get on a bus. Stop the car.â
âThatâs ⦠crazy.â Snow slowed the Shogun and parked next to a playground. âWeâll have to leave the longs.â
âLongs?â
âAKs.â
Racine reluctantly agreed; even with their collapsible stocks, there was no way to conceal the assault rifles under their jackets.
Racine got out of the car and Snow casually followed suit. She took his hand; it wasnât as rough as she expected. They walked side by side up the street for a while, until they found a row of bus stops. The absurdity of studying a bus timetable in a de facto war zone was not lost on her, but nevertheless she looked for one that went in the direction they wanted. Eventually they found the correct stop. Racine checked the old timetable secured behind a cloudy, plastic panel. Before the conflict a bus route had gone into the city centre and near the Circus, and she hoped it still did.
Around her, residents were attempting to get on with their daily routines. She had to admire the spirit of the Donetsk locals and their refusal to allow the conflict to dictate their everyday lives. Sheâd started off ambivalent to the crisis â it was just another foreign conflict to her â but now sheâd started to despise the Kremlin for the chaos and carnage it had caused. The people of the East deserved better. If taking out Vasilev also helped the Ukrainian people, it was an added benefit.
Racine linked arms with Snow and pushed these thoughts aside; they were just another couple waiting for a bus. Snow was quiet, watchful, but to the untrained he gave off an air of brooding indifference. He was taller than Baptiste, his muscles thicker. She imagined briefly what heâd look like with his shirt off. She whispered in Russian in Snowâs ear.
