KIRILL WAITED. HE DIDN’T LIKE this. Of course it was a heavy lie to tell, to offer money for a business and be believed, and perhaps the negotiations had taken a serious turn. He glanced at his phone. He’d give her a few more minutes before presenting himself as Val’s partner in business, and getting a chance to read the room.

Amanda appeared again in the doorway. A laptop in her hands.

“Follow me,” Amanda said.

Val stepped out into the hallway and Amanda closed the door behind her. “He’ll be okay?”

“Yes. He’ll be awake within ten minutes.”

Amanda hurried toward the rear area of the building. Packages were being routed, scanned, and gathered for loading. Val followed her. Amanda stopped where a few keys hung and grabbed one. “We have a driver out sick today. Roberto covered for him this morning.”

They went out the back, Val tensing in case Kirill had decided to monitor this side of the building or if he had help he hadn’t told her about. Her hand went into her purse and closed around the loaded Glock at the bottom.

Amanda went to a van, opened it, and Val got in on the other side.

“I cannot believe I am doing this,” Amanda said. “This ends everything, doesn’t it? My relationship. My work.”

“The Russian watching us in is in a gray sedan, parked up near the front. So let’s exit on the far side; he won’t see us.”

“Where am I going to?” Amanda said.

Val opened her phone, pressed an app that was labeled for horoscopes. It instead asked for her fingerprint and then opened into a hidden phone app. She dialed a number. “Terrell? Valeria. As one of your very best customers, I need your help. It’s an emergency.”
