Hunting

You should have a trained bird by now, so try to get out hunting as soon as possible. If you are going for rabbits you need to find a place where you know they will be out at certain times. This is where your field and country craft and knowledge is important, if you are not experienced ask someone who is to help you. For a couple of days, before you go hunting, switch the dummy bunny for a dead real one, let the bird feed on it and this will give her more of an idea of the real thing.

Don’t expect miracles straightaway, try, try and try again. You may have to bring the weight down a little to start the bird off, but remember every time you have done a weight reduction you must put it back up again. In fact, the weight of the bird should slowly increase over the years as she thickens out and gets muscled up. If you get really desperate, and your bird has caught nothing for months, I would suggest you go to a place like ours which does falconry experience or hunting days and ask for help. Bring your own bird and get them to help you enter it. We have done that occasionally and been successful. But, always remember, throughout the training and flying of your bird you must give her time, you will only get out what you put in.
