Chapter Thirteen

KYNA SLAMMED THE kitchen door and stormed to the sitting room with a beer in her hand. “Did you two get together and decide on the worst time to throw this at me?”

“Us two?” Rook took the beer and sat it on the table, unopened. “Save that. I want to talk about this.”

“With all that is happening right now? I need to focus on Nixie. Mom is in danger. I can’t help. Kip dumped me and now you. What? You want a commitment or you are leaving too?” She snatched the beer and popped the top. “I’ll drink when I want. All the work Sebastian did is gone.”

He took the drink from her and walked in the kitchen. “I didn’t know Kip was here. Kip left you?” The beer bubbled as he dumped it down the sink. “He said that it was over? We agreed not to pressure you. Kyna, believe me, that’s all that we talked about. I was here to explain that you can have all the time you need. We worked out our differences.”

“He said you and he had a heart to heart and he hates what I’ve made him.” She let tears start to fall. “I brought out the nasty in him. Is it true? He was making you work extra because of me? I was hurting you both?”

Rook nodded. “Sort of. It hasn’t been easy, but that’s’ what we agreed to. All of us. We are adults and we knew what this was.”

“Get away from me, Rook. I’m toxic.” She rubbed her forehead. “I don’t even have stable relationships with my mom or twin brother.”

Rook cleared the room and crushed her in his arms. “Bullshit. I never thought I would love. Not after what happened with my mother. I love you fiercely. You are brave, beautiful, intelligent. You are everything I need and, make no mistake I do need you. I’m entirely in love with you. My heart and soul are yours.”

“I’m not ready for that kind of responsibility. I’m clumsy and broken. I can’t love you like that. Don’t you understand? I’m not the kind of woman you want to give your heart to. You can’t love me. We agreed.” The intensity of his love chipped at her fears. He did love her. The realness was something new. Beautiful. Pure. Dangerous.

“No. You can control a lot. You can manage, run, dictate, and rule over a lot of things, but you don’t get to tell me who I love. I decide that. You can accept my love or reject it, but I decide who I love. I love you. I want to love you so deeply that you see yourself as the worthy person you are. The person with hopes and dreams they deserve to have. A person worth loving. The person you were before they broke your soul.”

“I’m not her anymore.” How many times did she have to think about how broken she was today?

“You are.” He tipped her head back. “Look at me.
