Lois turned to see the Toyman walking up a set of steel stairs. The mask with its weird grin was still stuck on his face.
âToo bad these kids trusted Bruno,â the Toyman said. âIf theyâre foolish enough to trust this crook, they deserve what they get.â
Soon the Toyman had reached a platform high above the factory floor. He pulled a remote control out of this sweater pocket. âIâve built a special toy for you, Bruno,â he said. âI think your new young friends will enjoy it.â Toyman pushed a button on the remote control.
Lois heard a bounce and a squeak. The noise grew louder. The kids pushed themselves closer. She hugged them tightly.
A soccer ball bounced out from behind a pile of toy cars. It stopped in the middle of the floor.
Everyone relaxed. Lois sighed, and Bruno smiled.
âWhatâs that supposed to be?â Bruno laughed. âYouâre going to kill me with a soccer ball?â
âItâs so much more than a soccer ball,â said the Toyman from his perch. He pushed another button on the remote. âLetâs play,â he said.
The soccer ball started to vibrate. Everyone closed their eyes, expecting it to blow up.
But instead of exploding, it opened with a A dozen blades, sharp as razors, poked out of the ball. The ball started rolling across the floor. The squeak was gone. The sharp blades scraped as they moved against the concrete.
The children screamed.
The soccer ball rolled toward them. Lois grabbed the kids. She pulled them away from the deadly ball.
âToyman, donât do this!â shouted Lois. She looked up at his perch. The little villainâs evil mask glowed with happiness.
âIâve finally got Bruno Mannheim right where I want him,â the Toyman said. âI have him trapped, and Superman canât get in my way. Itâs brilliant. Donât you think, Miss Lane?â
Lois was scared. âTurn Bruno over to the police,â she pleaded. âLet them take care of him.â
âMy super soccer ball is much more efficient, Miss Lane,â Toyman said. He jumped back onto the floor and laughed. âAnd when itâs done, there wonât be anything left to find.â
Lois looked over and saw Bruno climbing the Christmas tree on the float. âGet back here, you coward!â she shouted.
Bruno looked down at her and the kids. âForget it, lady. Youâre on your own,â he called.
The soccer ball turned toward Lois and the children. It chased them into a corner. The knives were flashing and slicing through the air.
