When I woke up the next morning, I smelled the bacon sizzling in the air. I opened my eyes and immediately recognized it as Harris’s living room.

The last thing I remembered was sitting on the couch with him, with my head on his shoulder and my arm around him. He hadn’t said much the previous night and it was all I needed to know and see to confirm that he’d had thoughts he didn’t know how to handle.

I recognized them because I had thoughts like those too. I understood how painful they could be and I wanted to be there for him. It didn’t seem like he’d had anybody else. Even his brother had seemed too busy with his own life to notice.

I couldn’t remember how long we’d sat there holding each other. It wasn’t just Harris healing, somehow I felt better too. I’d been worried about Bobby. I didn’t know how to find him and I didn’t know if I’d ever see him again or if he’d be all right. Then, as Harris held me in his arms last night, I realized it was out of my hands. My brother was his own person and he had his own life. There wasn’t anything I could do if he didn’t want to be helped.

“Good morning.” Harris popped his head around the living room door. He caught me by surprise as I rubbed my face, trying to get the sleep out of my eyes. Surprisingly, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d slept so well. “I’m making breakfast. Wanna join me in the kitchen?”

He smiled handsomely at me and I nodded.

All my clothes were intact, so we definitely didn’t have sex last night. Gathering myself quickly, I followed him into the kitchen. It was just as tastefully decorated and as grand as the rest of the house. Now that I knew his last name, it’d changed my perspective on a few things. Now I knew exactly how much money he had—how rich his family was, it made me even more uncomfortable to be here.

I couldn’t think of one good reason why he’d want me sticking around here. I was sure I wasn’t the usual breed of girls he brought around to his house. There wasn’t one sophisticated bone in my body.

However, I had to admit, he sure knew how to whip up an excellent breakfast. I had no idea how long he’d been laboring over the food, but the kitchen table was filled with plates of pancakes and crispy bacon, toasted bagels with cream cheese, fries and hash browns, a multitude of cereals and milk, and a big steaming pot of coffee.

“Seriously. Wow!” I exclaimed, standing at the table with my mouth hanging open.

Harris poured coffee into two large mugs and he handed one to me.

“I had some time on my hands and I felt like having a big feast,” he said.

“It’s definitely a feast.”

We settled into chairs across from each other, and I was thankful there was no apparent awkwardness between us.
