IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE AUDIOTAPE

Your family may decide for many reasons that audiotape is the way to go. Most of the rules for videotaping still apply. I also asked Judy Byers, author of Words on Tape and a leading expert on spoken audio to give us her best advice on how to create an audio masterpiece that will last for generations. She offered these suggestions:

•Practice speaking into the microphone and test how it sounds. You may not like the sound of your voice on tape. (It can sound strange to you because when you speak the sound vibrates differently into your ear than when you hear it from an external source.) Not to worry. If it sounds just fine to everyone else, relax.

•Use the best quality clip-on microphone you can buy. You might also consider using a very highquality microphone that sits on the table or even hangs on the wall. Keep in mind that sound is everything so be sure you do careful sound checks to ensure you are happy with the end result.

•Don’t use a microphone that gets passed back and forth. It makes people very self-conscious and it will sound like it on the tape. It is like the difference between a candid photograph and one that is posed. For this project we are more interested in a relaxed comfortable feel.

•Make the recording on good quality tape. Normal or chrome tape is fine.

•Take steps to prevent an accident. If you are using a cassette, punch out the two small plastic tabs on the top edge (opposite the open side where you can see the tape). When the cassettes are “tab out” no one can accidentally record over the content.

•Don’t select a tape that is over ninety minutes. A tape longer than that is thinner and not as durable.

•Consider renting high-quality equipment from professionals. They will know the latest and the greatest in gear. Ask for a good time to come in for instructions. Look in your Yellow Pages under “audiovisual equipment renting and leasing,” or “video equipment” (many will also have audio). You might ask about using a minidisc recorder if you want the highest possible sound quality.

•Use a dual boom box to make copies. You can make one immediately and send it home with someone else so you have a backup right away.
