The heads of claw hammers can vary. Framing hammers have a waffle texture for better grip on nailheads. If you see a notch in the top of the hammer face, that notch is called a nail setter. It’s a magnetic slot that holds a nail and allows for the starting of the nail with one hand, as opposed to the usual two. A related tool that puts this mechanism to great use is the tack hammer, an upholstery hammer used for driving small tacks into furniture frames. Those little nails can be hard to grasp and start, and tack hammers have magnetic heads for this reason.

Given the number of manufacturers, the lengths, grip textures, head shapes, and weights, much of hammer selection comes down to personal fit. Go to the tool store. Try some on. Give them a swing. It’s as personal a match as a pair of shoes.
