Chapter Eleven

Faith

I couldn’t bring myself to press the ignore button on Cameron’s incoming call, so I stared at the screen as it rang several times before rolling to voicemail. When my phone went dark again, I glanced up and let out a quiet exhale.

Jackal’s Pub wasn’t too busy that night. With the fear of losing my brother’s respect once and for all in mind, I finally managed to drag myself out of my melodramatic painting stupor and returned to the bar for my next shift. The usual customers milled around, content with their go-to drinks. They didn’t bother me for much as I stood behind the bar and continued to feel sorry for myself.

When I walked through the front door of the pub earlier that afternoon, I expected to see Finn glaring at me with his arms crossed against his chest. Instead, Uncle Mac was puttering around behind the bar, digging into the whiskey supply shamelessly. The bar wasn’t open yet, but the leader of the Jackals and anyone who carried the Shaw surname was given free access to the premises.

According to Uncle Mac, Finn wouldn’t be around until later that evening after he was done dealing with some Jackal business. I didn’t ask for details. I never did. I wasn’t interested in the criminal nonsense he got up to. However, whatever he was doing that night, must’ve been important because the only crowds left behind at the pub were the older men and women—those who typically didn’t join the rest of the Jackals when they were up to something that required nimble feet and good health.

Whatever. If my brother wanted to go risk his life smuggling goods into the city, it was none of my business. I’d simply continue to serve drinks behind the bar and collect my honest paycheck.

Except…

If I were being truthful with myself, my paycheck wasn’t as clean as I pretended it was. Although the pub was a real business that pulled in decent profits, it also served as a way for the Jackals to launder the money they reaped from their underground dealings. As such, there was no guarantee that some of the dirty cash trickled down into paying for my hourly rate as an innocent bartender.

Whether I liked it or not, I was still involved with the Jackals. I was playing their game, pouring drinks for the sake of their public image. Of course, it occurred to me that I could work at literally any other bar in the city. There were hundreds of thousands. Unfortunately, my brother paid me better than any of them would, and that was a difficult thing to turn down. He did that on purpose to keep me close.

My phone buzzed again. A huff of frustration puffed past my lips. How many times would Cameron keep trying to call before he finally gave up? What did I have to do? Did I need to be the one to inform that it was his family’s fault that mine was broken?
