At the door to Thomas Williams’ suite, Clive Mantle, assistant head of security for the Hyatt Piccadilly, knocked loudly on the door. It slowly opened as he did so, and he saw it hadn’t automatically closed because the inside lock, the metal bar that worked as a stronger version of a door chain had been placed across the frame, ensuring that the door would stay open. Added to that, the DO NOT DISTURB sign that had been on the handle all day was now gone.

As if he wanted someone to enter, Clive thought as he opened the door, entering the suite.

It was quiet; too quiet. Walking through the living area, he saw a small pile of mini bar spirit bottles on a chair, all empty.

Maybe the stupid bastard’s passed out, he thought as he entered the bedroom. But no, Thomas Williams wasn’t in bed.

‘Mister Williams?’ he asked. ‘Are you in here?’

No answer.

Clive was about to leave when he spied something in the bathroom. Walking in, he stopped, staring down in shock.

‘Clive to security, I’ve found Thomas Williams,’ he said. ‘We’re gonna need an ambulance here.’

‘What’s he done?’ The voice came back on the radio. Clive swallowed.

‘I think he’s fallen in the bathroom and smashed his head open,’ he said as he stared down at the body. ‘I’m not touching anything.’

‘Is he breathing?’

Clive leaned over the body, currently face down and placed two fingers on Thomas’ neck.

‘I think there’s a pulse, but I ain’t going any closer.’

He paused, noticing something large and rubbery on the floor. Pulling out a pen, he used the tip to gingerly turn it over, stepping back in horror as a man’s face stared at him. However, after a moment, rational thought came back, and he even laughed at his skittishness.

It was a mask. Nothing more than that.

‘Yeah, security?’ Clive spoke again into the radio. ‘We definitely need the police. Like, right now.’
