We march past another former place of worship. 'There are more medieval churches in the city than anywhere else in Northern Europe,' says Michael, mentioning an old saying: 'There used to be a church in Norwich for every Sunday and a pub for every day of the week.'

We arrive briskly (everything about Michael is brisk and to the point) at Surrey House. This is the headquarters of Aviva, formerly Norwich Union insurance company, a major local employer. It looks strangely familiar, and I'm soon learning why. The architect for this impressive building – lots of neo-classical columns and embellishments – is George Skipper, the designer of my hotel. Norwich Union commissioned Skipper, who began work in 1900, to make a bold statement about the company. 'This building lets people know: "Your money is safe in our pockets." For a few years they were on the cusp of whether to keep it [as a headquarters], but they felt it showed that they are a reliable insurance company,' says Michael, as we climb the steps and enter an extraordinary reception.
