Determine Your Goals: Self-Reliance vs. Enjoyment

Before you begin designing your garden, it’s important to determine whether your goal is self-reliance or simply enjoyment. Let me first be clear that both kinds of gardens are enjoyable. But self-reliant gardens should be designed to put hearty food on the table, while enjoyment gardens can be designed with only the pleasure of gardening in mind.

A self-reliant garden will need to contain a variety of vegetables that can provide real sustenance. The following example is a self-reliant garden that has been designed to focus on root vegetables, which are a keystone to putting real, hearty food on the table. This garden also includes space for greens, which are an important nutritional component. Finally, two smaller spaces are left for tomatoes, which are easy to freeze, and squash.
