Chapter Fourteen

BYRON SLIPPED BEHIND Destiny and wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on top of her head. “Are you going to tell me what’s bothering you? The last few days your vibration is less, well just less. This is supposed to be a romantic getaway. If you don’t start smiling, I’m going to lose my lover general rank.”

Destiny gazed at the jungle out of the balcony window. The struggle to smile at him and keep her emotions in check grew harder by the second. In the distance she sensed Radimir, and wondered briefly what he might be doing. Byron knew he was there on vacation with them, but so far, Radimir stayed at a distance, giving her time to do and say what she needed to for her own peace. There would be no peace. Not about this.

“Nothing is bothering me.” She added a laugh, hoping it sounded sincere. “You’ll never lose that title, you never held it. It was Jack’s to begin with, wasn’t it?” Her voice took on a more wistful tone. “It’s perfect here with you. I want to stay forever.”

“Jack? He’s so last generation. As if. He’s, not me, that’s for sure.” He leaned down and spoke softer, more seriously. “While as much as I agree, it is perfect here with you, and would like to believe you, I have no doubt something is bothering you.” His nose buried in her hair and nuzzled her ear. “Talk to me and then I will make you forget whatever it is.”

Her eyes closed and she drew in a deep breath. He couldn’t make her forget, she didn’t want to forget him. There would be no making this better. The sad look that Destiny often saw filling Rose’s face, even in the happiest moments, made sense to her now. This kind of loss wasn’t something a witch would get over, not ever.

She pressed against his body, enjoying the way his aura and hers mingled. He was magic, his touch, his personality, him. From the first time they hugged she always thought their bodies fit together perfectly. His scent brought up a million memories, real memories.

Was this real? she wondered. It felt real. Each of his caresses touched her soul as they always did. It was real to her, and it would be to Radimir. She wondered if it would be real in some way to Byron. Could she really tell him goodbye? Would it be possible to express how much he meant to her, or how much she loved him? If she could, would it be part of his memories before Akhos took him?

Her voice held sadness when she started to talk. Efforts to adjust it, failed. “You know I love you. I mean, I love you with my entire heart, body, and soul.” While she talked, her fingers laced in his and rested at her waist. “You are the reason I smile. My happiness. Byron, since the day we met, I couldn’t have imagined life without you.
