I climb into the shuttle and take my seat near the pilot in the cockpit. The women and the six other Marines on this mission are all seated in the seating area. It is a relief not to face Sophia. Even though her alluringly stimulating scent follows me through the open entryway.

I can’t get away from her, even if I wanted to. Which I don’t. I can’t. It’s like my entire being is begging to take it in. I want to inhale her aroma to the depths of my soul. I want it to fill me to the brim. I want it to complete my reality with the aromatic expression of her body. It’s as if the smell of her is the secret to the universe.

And I have to put an end to it. If only I could. I know that this obsession I feel for the little human is completely inappropriate. I am jeopardizing this mission by even having these thoughts. But I can’t stop it. I’ve been trying since the moment I first laid eyes on her. No. That’s not true. I was on the first mission to Earth. I helped Captain Noru save the Earth females from the Mantises. I met Sophia then.

She was just one of the women aboard the ship. However, I never saw her again until after I’d had my own injection of the matching serum.

Like all the other men on Mars, I have been given the antidote to the serum that drove fifty percent of us mad with lust.

Yet, I am feeling that madness now. I pray to the gods that she is indeed my match. It would save me from the utter damnation I am experiencing.

To want a woman who isn’t mine is to betray Mars. Mars is my life. I live to serve my planet and my home.

From the time I was a young man and entered the Marines, I have wanted nothing but to give my life to Mars. It is what has allowed me to climb the ranks and become a captain.

I am one of the youngest captains in Martian history. And I’ve been trusted with this mission. It may be because of my seat on the Martian Council. A seat I won in an election after my father passed away. And I am honored to continue to serve Mars in this capacity.

My father taught me to love my world and to do everything in my power to preserve and ensure her betterment. When mother died, we only had each other for many years.

I had no hope of having a mate of my own until the timegate made that possible. Everyone on Mars sacrificed and worked to bring the timegate into being for the chance to go back in time to save the future. This is my chance to be the man my father raised me to be.

As the shuttle disembarks from the ship, and we start our descent through Earth’s atmosphere, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe at the beauty of what was once humanity’s home.
