CHAPTER ELEVEN
On Friday morning, Winton drove to Savannah to pick up Sheryl for their flight to Atlanta. The good news: he was on time. The bad news: he had been in such a hurry that heâd driven away from his house without his framed pencil sketch of Sheryl.
âLetâs take it as my excuse to see you again,â Winton said.
Sheryl laughed it off. She tried not to appear overly eager to see the artwork.
Their conversations in the car and on the flight were casual and inconsequential, with neither one trying to sound overly desperate for the other if they discussed anything less mundane.
Still, Sheryl wondered what Winton might be thinking. He had told her he was in love with someone. Could it be her?
They had kissed on the rooftop.
Perhaps that had been due to their own loneliness, not love. Both of them hadnât been with anyone else in a long time. Her sudden appearance at his house on Wednesday might have triggered something.
On the other hand, what if God had kept them single for the last few years to prepare them for each other? What if Winton had finally let Abilene go and was now free to love again?
Having known Winton for a decade, Sheryl knew that he wasnât the type to randomly kiss a woman. It explained why he had a hard time getting over Abilene and why he hadnât dated since their break-up. Eight years might be a long time for Winton to be single, but he had needed that time to heal and recover.
Arriving at the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport shortly after two oâclock, Winton picked up Sherylâs luggage from the carousel and pushed it on a cart along with his own backpack and rolling suitcase. She didnât have to lift a finger.
He even paid for the rental car and drove her out of the airport. He knew where to go, checking her into her hotel room and delivering her luggage to her door. In fact, he even carried her laptop backpack.
âWould you like a snack or something?â Winton asked after he dropped off Sherylâs bags in her room.
âIs this when I tip you?â Sheryl laughed.
âIâll take a peck here.â He pointed to his cheek.
âSeriously, why are you doing all this for me? I can carry my own luggage.â
âDid I overdo it?â
âNo.â Sheryl felt bad she had responded the way she did. âIâm sorry. Thank you for helping me today.â
âYouâre welcome.â
She reached for his chin and gently kissed him on the lips. âWhen should I be ready for dinner tonight?â
âIt starts at six oâclock. How about I knock on your door at five forty-five? Weâll have to go eleven floors down to the ballroom.â
Sheryl checked her watch. âThatâs about five hours and forty-five minutes from now.â
âWhat are you doing between now and then?â
âMaybe Iâll take a nap. I donât have to get my hair done, as I plan to tie it up in a bun.â
Winton looked at her. âYouâve been to a lot of dinners.â
âOn behalf of Simonâs Gallery, yes.
