Karen drove the short distance to HMP Full Sutton prison and parked in the visitor car park. It was an imposing prison housing over six hundred category A and B prisoners, many of whom were some of the most dangerous criminals in the country. Karen had visited it occasionally while working in London and it always left an uncomfortable feeling in her. A robust and tough prison that also contained a section nicknamed the “Beast Wing”, it housed men convicted of the most despicable sex offences. With tight security, the prison proudly boasted of no prisoner escapes since its opening in the late eighties.

As she signed in at reception with Ed, her thoughts turned towards the update from the mortuary. The formal identification of Leah Hayes had been a difficult one. Her parents, Andrew and Carol Hayes, had travelled up from Kent first thing that morning. A family liaison officer had met them there and understandably Leah’s parents had struggled with their visit. Her mother, Carol, upon seeing her daughter, had collapsed in grief.

The FLO had called Karen with an update as Karen had been wrapping up a few things in the office. Karen had listened to the FLO’s account. Andrew had gone through periods of quiet reflection, to flashes of anger, and then floods of tears. All typical reactions Karen had seen first-hand. In part, she was glad she hadn’t been there to witness it. Especially the part where grieving parents begged the attending officers to find and bring to justice those responsible so they could lay their loved one to rest knowing no other family would suffer the same tragedy.

Karen had sent a text earlier to Izzy apologising for her absence. The post-mortem was well underway with officers from her team in attendance on her behalf who provided updates at regular intervals. Karen, expecting a similar outcome to Ruth Tate’s post-mortem wasn’t surprised to hear there was no evidence of defence wounds, stab wounds, blunt force trauma injury or any similar outcome. Compression of the neck confirmed the cause of death.

Karen and Ed went through the security scanners, placed their personal possessions in safe storage, and waited in the reception area for someone to take them to the formal interview rooms. It was while she was there, she noticed articles and drawings on one wall highlighting the work on building a new mega prison which would house nearly one thousand five hundred inmates. The plans looked impressive, and the new facility would sit alongside the existing prison. Karen read a list of features with interest. Billed as the UK’s first all-electric jail, the site would be powered by solar panels and heat pump technology.

“That’s gone down like a lead balloon with the locals,” Ed remarked, standing beside her.

“Really?”

“Yep. Huge objections from the local community. But they need it. The prison is already overcrowded.”

Their conversation was cut short when a member of the prison staff called their names and led them up a few floors and through a series
