9 THE DAY OF REST

Lily woke up bright and shiny the following morning with no thoughts about what she had done the previous night. She got up, opened all the windows and gazed out the window over her quarter of Bangkok. It was not a brilliant view, but she could see quite a long way out over her beloved Bangkok from her ninth floor flat and she liked the thought that there was one less pig in it.

She tipped some rice and sufficient water into the steamer and switched it on. Then she fried a few grammes of pork, a few slices of onion and six firey-hot red chillies and put them in a dish to wait for the rice. Isaan people were well known nationwide for their love of hot food and Lily was no exception.

While her rice was cooking, she lay on the couch, put the TV on and picked up her magazine. There was still no news of any of her ‘dead pigs’ as she thought of them, but then the saying went that no news was good news.

All in all, Lily reckoned that things could be a lot worse and probably would be pretty soon.

She didn’t actually think about them much really anyway – they were better off dead and society was better off without them. She didn’t think of getting caught either. As far as she was concerned, there was nothing to link her to those ‘random’ murders, although she wanted people to know that they were linked, just not linked to her.

Lily also wanted society to know why they had had to die. She only had one criterion: the wilful abuse of children. At the moment, all of the dead men fell into that category.

She thought of herself as a respectable member of society and was sure that most people thought the same of her. The only thing that they didn’t know was that she was on a clean-up operation and she was only just getting into her stride.

Lily was flitting in and out of being just Lily from Isaan and Tiger Lily of Bangkok, the avenger, but she could not see this yet, although she was still partly sane, or, at least, as much as a serial killer in peace time could be.

Lily became bored with her magazine and with the TV, so started some yoga asanas and karate katas. She was very lithe and could do practically any of the exercises in her books. Her favourite was the ‘Cat’ and could easily manage a few hundred repetitions. She liked to finish by standing on her head for twenty minutes. When she came down from that, she was ready for her breakfast and it was ready for her, so she mixed the pork, chillies and onions with a large portion of rice, added water and boiled it in a pan for a minute or two until it was piping hot and as sloppy as milky porridge.

It was such a simple dish, but one of Lily’s favourites.
