CHAPTER TWELVE

I tried to drown out the cursing I heard from Mike as the medics wrapped bandages around his chest. He was handcuffed to the bars so he couldn’t escape or try to attack them. I stood by; needing to watch and make sure he was okay. That was until one of the medics stopped me and said, “You can go now.”

“Um, that’s okay,” I said quickly.

But the boy just shook his head. “I’m sure you have more important jobs to do. Now get to them. We’ve got this from here.”

I looked over at Mike who narrowed his eyes at me, warning me not to draw any attention to myself. “Okay,” I gave in, throwing my hands in the air in mock surrender and turning to leave.

My eyes met Mike’s as I passed by his cell and he pretended not to notice me. My badge started buzzing then. When I pulled it from my chest it said Report to Dining Hall.

. . .

I grabbed a plate of food and a bottle of water and didn’t even bother to sit down before I headed straight outside to where the real Claudia was waiting. The look in her eyes, which was so angry the last time I saw her, had changed to weak and out of it. The shirt had fallen off her mouth but she didn’t even bother to scream anymore. “So nice of you to visit,” she croaked, her voice worn out.

I took a forkful of eggs and held them through the bars. “The only way you’re getting food is by me feeding you,” I told her. “You lost your privilege of feeding yourself.”

“I lost my privilege to do a lot more than that the second you decided to lock me up in here.” Her voice was so hoarse that it made me wince just listening to it. She took a bite of the food nonetheless. “Please,” she begged once she had swallowed. “Whoever you are, either just let me go or kill me. I can’t take anymore of this.”

“And what’s your reason for becoming a guard?” I asked, ignoring her plea.

I fed her another bite of eggs and she chewed slowly before swallowing and looking up at me with tired eyes. “I didn’t know where else to go,” she admitted. “When we had to take classes to be guards, I was the best at it. I figured I could have a future in it and be good at it. I was right. And what about you? Why are you really here?”

“You already know,” I responded.

I uncapped the water and held it to her mouth and she sloppily drank almost a quarter of it in seconds, water dripping down her chin and the sides of her mouth. I pulled it back and continued with feeding her. “I don’t,” she said. “Not really. But whatever it is, I can tell you really care about it.” She chuckled humorlessly to herself. “I wouldn’t know. I’ve never really cared about anything besides myself. I’ve never really had to care.
