CHAPTER FOUR

A WEEK LATER

“I was surprised when you called,” Laura Dobbins admitted.

“Why?”

“I haven’t talked to you much lately.”

“I’ve had a lot on my plate.”

“I thought it might have something to do with your new friend.”

Bridget smiled.

“I see,” Laura said. “The girls seem to like her.”

“They do.”

“Bridget? How serious is this new interest?”

“You mean Beth?”

Laura stared at her daughter.

“We’re getting to know each other.”

“How well have you gotten to know her?”

Not as well as I’d like.

“I see.”

“Mom.”

“Maybe you should let the girls stay here this weekend.”

“Why would I do that?”

“So you can spend a little time getting to know Beth.”

“You mean so I can have sex,” Bridget said.

“If that’s what you want to do.”

“Mom!”

“Isn’t that what you want to do?”

“I can’t believe we are having this conversation.”

“Why not?”

‘We don’t talk about these things?’

“What things?” Laura asked. “Sex?”

“Mom!”

“No, I guess we haven’t talked much about that. Not since you were a teenager.”

“How about we leave it there?”

“Are you embarrassed?”

“No,” Bridget said. “It’s just not something we talk about.”

“Are you in love with her?”

“Mom.”

“Are we not supposed to talk about that either?”

Bridget sighed. She spent years wishing she could talk to her mother about love, sex, and personal feelings. Laura Dobbins never approached those topics with Bridget. Bridget confided her feelings and her fears to her Aunt Mil. Mil was gone. Now, it seemed Bridget’s mother was keen to step into the role.

“Never mind,” Laura said.

“Mom. Please. I guess I don’t understand the sudden interest.”

“You think my interest in your life is sudden?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“I think it is what you mean.”

“No, it isn’t. I know you’re interested in my life. I know you’ve always wanted the best for me. We never discuss feelings. We discuss events, goals, and plans.”

“Is that how I’ve made you feel?”

“It’s our relationship.”

“You think I’m cold.”

“No. I don’t think that at all,” Bridget said. “I think you’re guarded.”

“Is that what Mildred told you?”

“Not this again.”

“Yes, this again. You think you understand what drove us apart.”

“Mom, you stopped talking to Martha when she married Nathan. That made it hard for everyone. Over something that had nothing to do with you.”

“It’s more complicated than that,” Laura said. “You and Mildred aren’t the only people who have feelings in this family.”

“Let’s not do this.”

“I think it’s time we do this. You felt drawn to buy that house.”

“And you were determined to keep me from it,” Bridget said.

“I don’t want to see you hurt.”

“It’s a house, Mom. It can’t hurt me.”

“But what it offers might.”

“The house isn’t cursed, and neither is the family.”

“Not always, no.”

“Mom. Please. There is no Morse Curse.”

“You might be surprised.”

“You know, for an educated woman, you are superstitious.”

“It’s not superstition if it’s true.”

“Oh, for God’s sake, Mom!”

“My grandmother told me if a Morse and a Davis ever came together, the curse would be unleashed,” Laura said.

“I’ve heard the story. It was a story. That’s all.”

“My grandmother never lied.”

Bridget wasn’t sure whether to laugh or scream. Laura held degrees in Art History and English Literature. She spent years teaching at the college level.
