He didn’t think he’d have much of an appetite after that morning, but the burger looked divine.

Kett, Porter and Savage sat in the steakhouse inside the Marriot hotel, the big windows looking out over the river and the Palace of Westminster. Porter was carving up a 14oz rump steak with such an expression of hunger that he looked like a werewolf. Savage’s portion of fries sat untouched in front of her as she bent over her phone, reading something on the screen.

Kett took a bite of the burger, wiping sauce from his stubbled chin as he tried to weave his thoughts back into some kind of pattern. Kingsley had seemed pretty furious about the fact he’d visited Schofield. But why? Was it, like she’d said, just the fact that they didn’t want him to mess up the investigation? Or was there more to it than that? If the man was as powerful as they said, then it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that he had people working for him.

That he had coppers working for him.

Kingsley seemed a little uptight to be corrupt, but you never knew for sure what somebody was capable of. It had only been five months ago that DCI John Cooper had tried to drive a knife into Kett’s stomach, after all.

Kett opened his messages and fired off a quick one to Bingo.

Sorry sir. You’re going to have to trust me. Schofield known as ‘Piggy’ at school, definitely knows more than he’s letting on. Needs to be watched.

He took another bite and noticed Savage watching him. She looked concerned.

“What’s up?” he asked her, his mouth full.

“I’m just…” She shrugged. “Look, I know I’m new to this. It just seems like you’re working against the people you should be trying to help.”

Kett nodded.

“You are new,” he said. “But you’re not stupid. Nothing’s clean cut on a case like this. Nothing’s simple. I’m glad you’re here, Kate, but I didn’t ask you to be. I don’t want you to get in trouble, and if you need to go I won’t hold it against you, not one bit. But it’s my wife. It’s the girls’ mum. I have to do this.”

She thought it over, her big eyes not leaving his. Eventually, she held up her phone.

“As far as I can tell, every Portia Moran on Facebook is alive and accounted for. There are five of them, and three of them accepted my request straight away—they’re school kids, they should know better.” She picked up a chip but seemed to instantly forget about it as she scrolled through her phone. “The other two have private Facebook but open Instagrams, and they’ve posted as recently as today.”

“Nobody else with that name?” Kett asked.

“Not in the UK,” she said. “It’s unusual. But…”

She remembered the chip, sliding it into her mouth then immediately pulling it out.

“Fudge, that’s hot!”

She reached for the ketchup only for Porter to pull it out of her reach. He actually sounded like he was growling.

“I’m not after your meat, Pete,” she said, grabbing the bottle from him.
