Their times on the Nile were some of Sakura’s best memories. They would often row to the shore, make love, eat some fruit, drink some wine and lie in each other’s arms for hours, just watching children play on the river’s edge. These were the peaceful moments when they left their jobs on the dock and concentrated solely on each other. It was not difficult to focus on Tarik’s muscular body and lean waist. He was as fit as any man Sakura had ever seen, and she loved the feel of his hard body pressed up against her.

They had been a natural fit since she could remember, and she looked forward to these peaceful times of floating down the river as if they had not a care. They would talk about the comings and goings in court, the gossip, the tales, all the things that would take them away from their somber issues they faced daily. It was Sakura’s favorite time.

“I do not like you putting yourself in danger, Sakura, even if it is for your sister,” Tarik said after she told him about her visit with Jessie. “Are you certain there is no other way to keep your sister from harm?”

“I shall not be in any real danger, my love. I am merely the purveyor of information that might very well bring him to us.”

“I do not like the sound of that, Sakura. If the priest is, indeed, the one you seek, I shall—”

“Do nothing. We cannot risk your duplicity being discovered. We must keep you as close to Nefertiti as possible. I will not risk exposing you.”

Tarik pulled her closer. “You are ever my shield, my love. I will not sacrifice her safety, but what you intend to tell him does not exist. There is no tomb being built for Tutankhamen, and it does not sound as if the learned men from the future know much about our tombs or which pharaoh is in which tomb. It does not appear men in the future know much of anything.”

“It does not matter that the information we give him is false, only that he acts upon it.”

“But I still do not understand how it can help. The man is obsessed with the queen, not the boy.”

“Jessie believes his family was murdered because of his knowledge about where a golden mask is. This man…this Al-bert, has been coming and going through the portal for some time. In all of his journeys, he was able to gather information and use it to locate our…art-i-facts.”

“Art-i-facts?”

“That is what they call the king’s sacred objects looted from his tombs. Men from the future collect things stolen from our tombs and graves. Some are paid handsomely to find them, others sell them to museums.”

“Our king’s sacred objects end up in a museum?” Tarik bowed his head and shook it sadly. “What is to come of us if our greatest treasures are sold to the highest bidder?”
