Susan

I hear Kelsey gasp, so I make a choking noise, praying Kevin didn’t notice the sound from the vent. I’m shocked enough that I can’t formulate anything to say. Finally, I sputter, “Dr. Stephen Grant?”

Kevin nods. “Yes,” he says. “He said he’d always thought it was weird that you and Kelsey were marked so close in time to each other. Said that was the main reason he’d gotten involved in helping with your surgery. He’d contacted Patricia Donnelly when he heard about the spinal recalibration technique and even suggested you as the first patient.”

I think I’m going to vomit. I put my hand on my stomach, trying to steady it, and take a deep breath.

“Sue, are you OK?” Kevin asks, leaning toward me. “Are you sick?”

I shake my head no and try to pull myself together. Kelsey, Luke and Penelope are counting on me, but all I can think of is what Kevin said. “Dr. Grant suggested me as the first patient?”

Kevin nods as he tries to figure out what is going on with me. Why I look pale and stricken. He doesn’t know. Very few people know that I didn’t just find out about a surgery that could reverse my paralysis and then go in for it. I was kidnapped and held hostage by the people who wanted me to have it. And Dr. Grant suggested it? God, I can’t even wrap my mind around it. Maybe he lied to Kevin about this. Maybe he didn’t suggest me. But why would he lie about it? If he’s telling the truth, that means Dr. Grant is responsible for my kidnapping, for me being held captive for almost a year and then nearly murdered.

“Sue, let me check you out,” Kevin says, frowning with concern. He reaches into his shoulder bag and pulls out an LMS reader. It’s a small rectangular device about eight inches long and two inches wide and deep. All doctors have one. “You really don’t look good.”

I need a minute to think, so I simply shove my arm in his direction, and he waves the reader over the LMS in my arm.

“Your heart rate’s a little high,” he says, looking at the readings. “Your blood pressure’s good, cholesterol is fine, oxygen level is normal.” He pauses a second, looking at the screen on his reader, then he scrunches up his face in confusion. “Sue, your medical file is locked.”

I wish he hadn’t said that. “I know,” I say, deciding to tell him the story I concocted the other day. “Given that my marking file was tampered with, and we still didn’t know who did it, I asked my doctor to lock it. She said it would unlock if a doctor declared it a medical emergency.”

“That’s true. I can unlock it by declaring an emergency override,” he admits with hesitation. “But those are always investigated, so doctors prefer not to have to do that. Plus, most people leave it open so anyone examining them can have a look. I wanted to see if you had any conditions that might be contributing to your current problem.
