CHAPTER 7

KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON

“Shine your light and make a positive impact on the world; there is nothing so honourable as helping improve the lives of others.”

― Roy T. Bennett -

The magic is not in starting a business. The magic is in keeping the business going. Almost every entrepreneur who has made a few strides in their own entrepreneurial journey would tell you that the most difficult part of entrepreneurship is maintaining the business growth. Many companies die during their growth period. Killed by what was supposed to grow them: growth. Many companies are killed by poorly managed growth.

It was easy for the entrepreneur to start the business. In fact, starting, that’s where the fun is. Running around doing this and that. Getting calls from people asking about your business. Having approximately ten customers that you are servicing. It’s so fun. You will feel like you are on top of the world. For the very first time in your life, you feel like a real entrepreneur. I believe every entrepreneur enjoyed this phase of their business. If you haven’t started your business yet, trust me on this one, you are going to enjoy this beautiful phase of your life. It is like your first day at school. Excitement is running all through your body systems. Hyped up. You are now a Chief Everything Officer, fired up and ready to go. Getting to meet new people, gaining new experiences. Getting some recognition here and there, social media and local media houses. Everything going so well. Then suddenly, the first tire burst, and only then are the real drivers proven.

A lot of things will happen in your entrepreneurial journey. They are not new. Many other entrepreneurs out there went through them as well. It’s a fact. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, some disappointments, and other very discouraging things are going to come to your attention. They say in life it is either you are in a problem, or you just got out of one, or you are headed toward one. I believe that in business this statement still applies.

Entrepreneurship begins with identifying problems to solve, that’s how it gets you to own a business. It doesn’t end there, many other challenges will still arise to counter-attack the very same solution which is trying to solve another societal problem, despite the good intended. When the storms hit, of which they are going to, that’s where you as the entrepreneur need to prove to the winds that you have what it takes to sail the boat through the storm to the shore. It never ends. From time to time, every business is always faced with some wrong to right. The lights dim, sometimes they threaten to shut down entirely until the entrepreneur rises to provoke their faith to go beyond the fears to keep the lights on and the boat sailing.

Entrepreneurship is like a unicycle, you need to maintain a proper balance while you are on top, but by all means possible, you need to keep moving.
