Unleashing Your Unique Capacity for Creativity

Sarah Halstead shifts her weight from right to left as she stares into the camera. She is seated on top of a rustic wooden table in her backyard. Her tailored red blazer seems perfectly out of place. So does her well-coiffed blonde hair. “Oh, honey, you don’t need a wide shot of this,” she says as the camera pans down to reveal her pajama bottoms. She grins and keeps talking. “Just the waist up. It’s one of the perks of this thing.”1 She’s filming a bit to promote her segment for All Together Now, a livestreaming event to support the city of Los Angeles during the coronavirus pandemic.

Halstead joined Tim Allen, Jeff Bridges, and others for a show viewed in over seventy countries. Her self-effacing humor draws you in. Before long, that fifteen-second clip you started watching turns into an hour.

Halstead’s new comedy show, RVs and Cats, is an autobiography. A lady from Flint, Michigan, finds herself spinning her wheels in a job she doesn’t like and married to a man who doesn’t like her. So she buys a thirty-foot RV, packs her cat and suitcase, and sets off across the country without much of a plan. The show dropped at a perfect time. The world was pushed indoors due to shutdowns and social distancing requirements. Everyone was busy figuring out how many times they could rewatch a TV series before they were paralyzed by boredom.

Halstead’s humor strikes a chord, and she works hard to connect with her audience. She tells me that if a joke doesn’t work, it is better to own it: “Yeah, I didn’t like that joke either,” she’ll confess onstage. That approach goes over well: “The audience loves when I acknowledge that a joke doesn’t go over well. They like to be on the train with you. But there is a fine line. They don’t like an amateur comic either; they like to feel that the comic is in control.”2
