A half-hour later, Lempe handed them a folder. “That’s all we have. He was busted for marijuana possession a number of years ago. It was probably enough to deal but he got probation. Four years or so ago he was in a bar fight at The Port out of Pokegama Lake. Popular spot with the locals. A lot went on that night there. I investigated the aftermath of the brawl and I remember interviewing Kellin. He was a regular there.”

He flipped through the investigative notes he had. “It actually started with Denny. He was not the aggressor, other than hitting on a woman. Her boyfriend, a fella named… let’s see here, Shane Buckley, that guy.”

“That guy?” Steak said.

“Buckley was a guy with a colorful history of his own. He took offense to Kellin putting the moves on his woman and started throwing haymakers at Kellin and anyone in his vicinity. A bar brawl ensued, multiple combatants and lots of shit got broken. Kellin spent the night in jail with several others and was bailed out in the morning.”

Tori took the file. There were photos of Kellin. She held it up. “He took a beating it seems.”

Lempe nodded. “Yeah, pretty bad black eye. Buckley got his shots in. It was far from his first fight.”

“Was he arrested?”

“Yes,” Lempe said. “He was a real dick. I was none too surprised he ended up dead a few months later.”

“Dead?”

“Found dead in a parking lot up in Ely. He was a guy who had some enemies. That night at The Port was not the first time he’d tangled with the law. He was a shit disturber, quick fuse type who never shied from an altercation. He might have been a militia guy, there is a little of that out in the woods around here.”

“A little crazy then,” Steak said.

“More than a little. He finally went too far and someone took him out. As I recall, he was basically beaten to death, with fists and feet, and then his throat was slit.”

“Ooh,” Steak grimaced.

“Not a great way to go.”

“They ever find who killed him?”

“No,” Lempe replied. “Unsolved as far as I know. As for Kellin. He did a night in jail and that was it. But like I said, he was a regular out there. If you want to know more about him, you could go out to The Port. Lots of long-time employees. They might know more.”
