Chapter Eight

I can't believe I ran away from this man. Evan paused with his hand on the door of his brother's hospital room, taking in the scene inside. The glow of the morning sun wreathed the room's occupants in a golden haze. Gil sat in a boxy chair pulled up close to Ethan's bed, holding his brother's hand between his own and smiling so tenderly, face betraying so much emotion Evan couldn't believe he hadn't always seen it.

A fragile, somewhat faded looking Ethan smiled up at Gil from a reclining position on the hospital bed. He was covered with a bright quilt Evan recognized as one his grandmother had made before her death, tiny triangles of boldly colored fabrics arranged in dizzying whirls and starbursts. Green plants and bright floral tributes sat on the wide window ledges that overlooked the parking lot. A tray of food sat neglected off to the side.

IV lines and assorted wires disappeared under the quilt. Evan's heart ached a little when he noticed them. Ethan was pale, thinner than he'd ever been. Never as muscular or bulky as Evan, he looked down right frail next to Gil's bulk. Dark shadows underlined blue eyes, and even from the door, he could make out tiny blue veins traversing his twin's temples. Guilt swamped him.

He should have known the phantom pains weren't the acid reflux his own physician had suggested. He hung back in the doorway, loathe to disturb the couple. Maybe he should just slip quietly away. The faint doubt about what he was doing faded quickly when both Gil and Ethan turned and caught sight of him. Their faces brightened, and each extended an arm, inviting him in. "I used to dream about this." He blurted into the comfortable silence. His face burned a bit as what he'd said sunk into his consciousness. "Well, minus the tubes and the antiseptic smell and the gross Jell-O."

"Where have you been?" Ethan demanded, smiling so wide Evan thought the corners of his mouth might reach his ears. Ethan patted the colorful quilt. "Come in."

He coughed in embarrassment, holding out the white paper bag with the hospital's logo stamped on the side. "I slipped into the gift shop to get you this. Some kid recognized me."

Ethan's eyes went to the bag. "Were you nice to him? What is it?"

"Of course I was nice to him! I smiled and signed his cast and listened to him Monday-afternoon quarterback the game. Kid told me every single mistake I made along with how much he loved watching me."

The bag crunched in Ethan's grip. "I'm sorry I couldn't go, Ev. I really would have, if it hadn't been for this." He opened the bag and peered inside, smiling a little. "You're awesome, you know that?" Ethan pulled out the bag of SunChips, chuckling. "Gil told me you ate the ones he bought."

Evan dragged the other uncomfortable chair up to the opposite side of the bed. "You know, if you'd told me about this, I'd have skipped the game and come to you, don't you?"

"That's why I didn't tell you.
