Chapter Twenty-One

Frank was growing more and more impatient by the second. He had never been a sit-around-and-wait type of guy. He was action-oriented. It was a big reason why he had been able to build such an empire in Honolulu—partially because he outworked everyone, and the other part being that when his men watched him grinding and not just barking orders, it bred loyalty. They wanted to get things done for him. So, sitting in the cell phone lot with Kona, waiting for someone to call, with his rifle sitting in his lap, was damn near excruciating.

“The longer we go without a call, the worse the news is going to be,” Frank said.

“You’re probably right,” Kona said.

Frank was still fuming from his call with Walker. The balls on that guy. More infuriating was how all the connections he had hadn’t come through with picking him up since the call. They sent at least ten men—between Frank’s guys and the officers Joe said he had go to the apartments. Walker and the prostitute’s sister should already be in hand.

As soon as the call ended with Walker, Frank knew he finally had to call in the favor he was owed at the FBI. He had bailed Special Agent Rick Garcia out two years ago. He had wracked up gambling debt with the wrong people. Those people were going after Rick’s family. Frank stepped in and kept Rick’s family safe, and took on the debt. Rick had been making monetary payments back to Frank ever since. Now it was time for his work favor.

Rick was open to helping. Of course, he didn’t have a choice. He said it helped that Taylor Crenshaw had absolutely no FBI business there in Honolulu. He thought it would be easy to get her detained at the airport. That was ten minutes ago.

Frank lit another cigarette. “I can’t just sit here and do nothing. Let’s at least get a backup plan in the works.”

“I’m ready.”

“Say Walker gets out of downtown with the girl’s sister. Where does he go?”

Kona rubbed his chin. “Wouldn’t he come here to the airport? It’s where his girl is. And the girl’s sister.”

“No. He knows we’re here. And I’m sure by now Walker has talked to her.”

“Probably,” Kona said. “But she doesn’t know you called in an FBI favor. She probably told him it was clear to come here.”

Frank let that sit for a moment. It only made his frustration grow. It was reaching a tipping point. He just wanted some information. Any information. Even if it was bad news.

His phone rang and he picked it up immediately. “Rick, talk to me.”

“Airport police are going to pick her up.”

“Excellent.”

“I’m on my way. I had to tell them I was coming to question her. There are cameras everywhere, Frank. What do you expect me to do with her?”

“Walk her out the back door, Rick.”

Frank heard a sigh.

“Am I asking too much here, Rick?”

“Frank, you know it’s not that. She’s FBI too. She probably has some pull somewhere.
