It was late evening before Tyson was ready to leave England. The artificial base lighting reached toward the heavens like a pale, glowing dome, coloring the sky a velvety shade of indigo. Kō stood beside him on the tarmac, their hair rising in the artificial wind caused by the whirring plane. The flight line crew hurriedly worked to empty the crates of supplies flown in from the States. Some would be weapons and munitions, but most of the crates held clothing, tradables, and commodities like chocolate and chewing gum that were nearly impossible to find anywhere but New Texas.

“Are you ready, friend?” Kō asked, his eyes watching the empty horizon. Tyson shrugged.

“As ready as I ever am.” He chuckled a bit. “Honestly, I’m not even sure what I’m looking for. We already know Hawaii was ground zero for a large majority of the breakout, more so than the other ELIAS medical centers, so I’m not sure what more there is to learn. And if this is anything like what happened in Okinawa, there won’t be much left anyway.”

“No,” Kō said, crossing his arms. “If this is like Okinawa, there will be too much left. Was that not the problem?”

Tyson drew a deep breath. “Yeah.”

Hordes of zombies had filled the island, unable to leave because they couldn’t swim. There weren’t any human survivors to be seen. Tyson hoped that was because they had escaped to one of the smaller surrounding islands, Honshu, or even China during the early Waves. Either way, the place was eerie, and the sight of the mindless scavengers combing the de-populated island for any sign of food chilled him to the bone. More than once, Tyson had watched a group of zombies turn on a single member of their horde and tear it apart.

The creatures didn’t know what to make of him and his team when they arrived at the island by helicopter. Hundreds were drawn in by the sound, gathering together in a mass huddle as they stared at the helicopter’s belly with a startling level of clarity. It was as if they were calculating how to bring it down.

Tyson shivered, shook his head.

A young woman jogged along the edge of the flight line. Her blonde ponytail bounced against the back of her blue-gray New Texas flight suit. She came to an abrupt stop a few feet from Tyson and Kō before saluting sharply. Her uniform had captain bars. The poor girl didn’t look a day over eighteen.

“Good evening, Ambassador,” she said to Kō. He saluted her back, and she dropped her arm. “Preparations are complete, sir.” She turned to Tyson and saluted again. “Whenever you’re ready, Col. Hall.”

“Thank you, Captain,” Tyson said, saluting her. She nodded, her stern face melting slightly.

“It’s always a pleasure to serve the State, sir.”

Of course it is, Tyson wanted to say, because that’s how you’ve been trained.

Kō’s hand landed on Tyson’s shoulder. “Good speed, my friend.”

Tyson’s lips twitched into a smile. “One of these days,” he said, turning to clasp Kō’s hand in a firm shake.
