The point of a proof paper is to give you some idea of what your image will look like when it’s printed on your good paper. Don’t spend a lot of money on proof paper, but look for something that has similar characteristics to the image paper you plan to use.

George Walker. Sita. 2003. Wood engraving; 3" x 4.75"

Alan Stein did this wood engraving to commemorate 25 years of the Poole Hall Press. Bill Poole was a great influence on me and many other artists. The engraving accompanied a poem Alan Stein printed as a broadside on his Chandler and Price clamshell platen press. This print shows how effective the white line can be. Compare it with David Moyer’s arresting black-line image on page 100.

Bill Poole Anniversary Engraving. 1997. Wood engraving; 3" x 4"
