TWENTY-SIX

Amanda and Trent found Malone in his office and brought him up to speed. His facial expression was priceless. Widened eyes, slack jaw.

“You’re being serious?” Malone said. “Three bodies?”

“Yep, that’s what they’re saying anyway. Apparently, they are buried just outside the town limits. We have to go there to find out if he’s telling the truth,” Amanda said.

Malone ran a hand over the thinning hair on his head, then plucked at his groomed beard. “All right. We’ll get a K-9 team out to scout the area, see what they can find. We can’t ignore the possibility this is legitimate.”

“As absurd as it all sounds, I think it is, Sarge,” Trent chimed in. “Reid Sherman is prone to violence, which we saw with what he did to my aunt.”

“Yes, I’m not disputing that, Stenson.”

“But Sherman’s not our killer. He’s too large,” Amanda chimed in.

“What is your take on Seth Dodger?” Malone leaned forward, taking them both in. They were seated in chairs in front of his desk.

“Like his lawyer, he lives up to his name,” Trent quipped. “But he doesn’t deny sending Reid Sherman to my aunt.”

“An illegal bookie, who thinks it okay to rough up people who owe him money. Nah, this guy isn’t getting out of jailtime by throwing his enforcer under the bus. There’s no way I’m cutting him loose even if the list pans out.”

“Technically, I never promised a thing,” Amanda said.

“Good girl… Ah, good work, Detective.” Malone corrected himself. It didn’t happen often, but sometimes the long-standing friendship he had with her father influenced how he spoke to her.

“I didn’t see I had a choice but to play along. If what he’s told us is correct, we’re talking about three homicides. That’s three families who have never received closure. There can finally be some justice.” As much as she didn’t want there to be bodies to find, she knocked off two upsides if there were.

“When did these murders take place?”

“That he didn’t tell us,” Trent said.

“Regardless, we have enough to move. I’m going to get the dogs and their handlers dispatched to the scene immediately. I’ll let you know if they find the bodies, but I want your focus to stay on resolving Lambert’s murder.”

Amanda was trying to process what that meant for her and Trent. “Does that mean we’re not needed on site? Someone else will notify the victims’ families?”

“That’s exactly what I mean. You’ve done your part getting it this far and have your hands full already. If bodies are found, I’ll assign the investigation aspect to Hudson and Ryan. They’ll take care of notifications too once the remains are identified. But we could be hours or days out from that. All assuming, of course, there are victims to find.”

Fred Hudson and Natalie Ryan were two other detectives in the Homicide Unit. She nodded, appreciating that Malone was right. They couldn’t afford to let Don’s murder case sit in limbo while they took the detour. But there was another aspect to that. “Ah, I would like to state one thing for the record, though, Sarge.
