from BIRD WATCHING ON SCOLT HEAD

E. L. Turner

Emma Turner (1867–1940) was a pioneering writer, photographer, ornithologist and conservationist who grew up in Kent. A chance encounter with Richard Kearton, one of the most notable early wildlife photographers, encouraged her to capture wildlife on camera. This led her to spend summers living on The Water Rail, a houseboat that she designed on a tiny island that now bears her name on the Norfolk Broads. Working with local gamekeeper Jim Vincent, she rediscovered the bittern as a breeding bird in England and obtained photographic proof. She wrote eight books including Broadland Birds (1924) and Birdwatching on Scolt Head (1928), where she worked as a warden for two summers. She lived alone on this remote tidal island, protecting the tern colonies from foxes, day-trippers and egg-collectors. Her photographs and writing appeared in numerous publications from Country Life to British Birds.
