WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO REMEMBER?
Centuries ago, people knew details of what happened in their lives because stories were told and family history was handed down from generation to generation through songs, books, and conversations. Details got lost or changed over time, but the important stories were ingrained and remembered.
Those of you old enough to remember the days before smart phones and digital cameras may find your early memories a little foggy if your parents didn’t engage in a lot of reminiscing with you. But making sure your children do hold on to memories doesn’t necessarily require technology.
For this next exercise, come up with a list of important events you want your kids to remember. Start by jotting down ideas that fall into any of the categories in the chart below. We’ve given you a few ideas to get you started. Add your own memories.
Category Events
One-Time Family Events Family Wedding. The last time we saw Grandma. Graduation. A religious event.
Traditions Family game night. Taco Tuesdays. Camping trips. Decorating the house for the holidays.
Significant Moments Building the tree house together. Raising funds for the animal shelter. Helping the neighbor fix her fence. Our Grand Canyon vacation.
Miscellaneous Memories Learning to make lasagna. Meeting the neighbor with all the cats. The no-hitter we witnessed.
Our children will have all kinds of memories of past experiences regardless of what we, as parents, do. However, being intentional about remembering is a chance for you to consider ways you can help shape how your children view themselves and your family, how you’ve spent your time together, and how their view of their past experiences shapes their future.
