Chatty Cabinets

While writing Home Design with Feng Shui A–Z, I had a very interesting experience. Our home has a wall of built-in cabinets in the living room where we store much of our house “jewelry.” One cabinet is reserved for ornamental items such as vases, decorative boxes, and candleholders. I happened to open that cabinet after a day of writing about how our possessions talk to us whenever we’re around them. What I saw when I opened the cabinet was not a number of pretty things, but a crowd of people. Each item evoked a memory of a person that I probably wouldn’t have remembered for any other reason—some of them great, some of them not so great. And, for a moment in time, those people were sitting on my shelf talking to me.

One voice came from a hand-painted wooden box that I’d bought for a friend years ago and had never given her. I liked it, bought her something else, and kept the box for myself. Still, the box seemed to have her name written on it. So there she sat, reminding me yet again to give her the box. I felt the same stab of guilt I experienced every time I looked at it. Sitting next to “her” was a pencil holder my grandfather had carved from a piece of firewood. There he proudly sat on my shelf, telling me that he could make something beautiful out of just about anything. Each “person” had something to say, and for the first time, I really took the time to listen. As a result, I finally gave my friend (who loved my story about the “talking” cabinet) her wooden box, and put my grandfather’s pencil holder on my desk. I also let go of a number of chatty items that, although beautiful, didn’t belong in the crowd of memories I like to hang out with. Now when I open that cabinet, the voices I hear are sweet and elicit wonderful feelings and memories.

CONTEMPLATIVE EXERCISE

WE’VE ALL HEARD THE SAYING “SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSET.” IT BECOMES QUITE LITERAL IN FENG SHUI. TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR “HOUSE JEWELRY,” AND SORT OUT THE THINGS THAT EVOKE UNPLEASANT MEMORIES, FEELINGS, OR ASSOCIATIONS. LISTEN TO THE TALE EACH ITEM HAS TO TELL, AND DECIDE IF YOU REALLY WANT IT IN YOUR SPACE. STEP FULLY INTO THE PRESENT, YOUR PLACE OF POWER, AND LET GO OF ANYTHING THAT DOESN’T HAVE NICE THINGS TO SAY. IN SO DOING, YOUR ENERGY, AS WELL AS THE ENERGY IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT, WILL SOAR.
