SEVENTEEN: EAGLES
The regimentâs psyber-eagle was roosting on a fence overlooking the billet yard, one head tucked asleep, the other wary and watching the dawn fiercely.
The sky was pink and the angles of the shadows long and hard. Zhukova wandered into the yard, greeting the sentries at the billet doors.
âUp early,â said Daur.
âSo are you,â she replied with a smile.
âIf I sleep for too long, the scar gets sore,â he replied, patting the side of his belly with a grimace. âA little stroll stretches it out and eases the cramp.â
âElodie not mind you leaving her bed now youâre only just in it?â asked Zhukova.
âIâll be back directly,â said Daur with a grin. âAnyway, sheâs been up half the night. Criidâs little girl, Yoncy. Tona had to shave her head. Lice, you know. Poor kidâs beside herself at the loss of her pigtails. Theyâve been taking it in turns to sit with her and calm her down.â
âI thought I heard sobbing,â said Zhukova.
âOh, that,â laughed Daur. âThatâs just all the hearts youâve broken. The men of T Company, crying in their sleep.â
Zhukova snorted.
âI was going for a run,â she said.
âCheck with the scouts. Theyâre watching the area. After yesterday.â
She nodded, and then paused.
âWhatâs this now?â she asked.
An armoured transport, unmarked, was rolling down the track towards the yard.
âIs that Gaunt back at last?â she asked.
Daur shrugged.
âNo idea,â he said.
Fazekiel, Baskevyl and Domor emerged from the billet units behind them. Each of them was in a clean number one uniform.
âWhatâs going on?â asked Daur.
âExciting day,â said Bask. âWeâre summoned to the ordos.â
âWhat? Why?â asked Zhukova.
âBecause someone,â said Domor, looking daggers at Baskevyl, âwas daft enough to feth around with the fething special cargo, thatâs why.â
âItâs routine,â said Fazekiel. She finished pinning up her hair, and put her cap on, peak first. âThe ordos took charge of the trinkets we picked up, and they want to interview everyone who came in contact with them.â
âTrinkets, she says,â moaned Domor.
âLunaâs right, itâs just routine,â said Bask. He dead-panned straight at Zhukova and Daur. âWhen we donât come back, dear friends, remember our names.â
Zhukova and Daur laughed.
The transport drew up in the centre of the yard, and a rear hatch opened. Inquisitor Laksheemaâs little aide stepped down.
âFazekiel? Domor? Baskevyl?â she called out, reading off her data-slate.
âKeep it down, youâll wake the dead,â Baskevyl called back.
âWouldnât be the first time,â said Onabel. She waited, sour-faced, as the trio walked over to her and climbed aboard. Baskevyl shot Daur and Zhukova a cheeky wave as the hatch closed.
âWell,â said Daur, âfun for them.â
âThey can keep that kind of fun,â said Zhukova.
âWhat is it?â asked Felyx. âIs it my father?â
He was squirmed down in his bunk under a heap of blankets, just his face poking out. At the window, Dalin yawned as he looked out into the yard below.
âNo, some transport,â he said. âBaskevyl heading off with Shoggy and the commissar.â
âLudd?â
âNo, not Ludd,â said Dalin. He yawned again as the transport drove away. âFazekiel. We should get up.â
âIs it time to get up?â
âIt will be soon.
