As his day at the clinic ended, Dave grabbed his parka and strode to the door. Before going home, he had to pick up the groceries Megan had ordered. Then he would stop for the pizza he’d promised the kids.

He groaned. Laci Smith lurked beside his sedan. He pushed past her and opened the driver’s door.

“Don’t be in such a rush. I visited with your fiancée and her brats. How did she con you into thinking they’re your relatives?”

He turned. “And you know they’re not mine. How?”

“The youngest two are blondes.”

“Give up. They’re my dead sister’s children. Now they’re mine. There never was and never will be anything between us. Thank God I’m leaving here soon.”

“You’ll be sorry. That blonde will walk away.”

Though he knew Megan planned to leave on Saturday, he kept his knowledge close. “Just get lost.” The temptation to commit physical violence stunned him. He slid into the car and locked the doors. For a few minutes, he stared at the dashboard before starting the engine.

At the grocery store, he carried four bags to the car and then stopped for two large pizzas. Before long, he reached the house and pulled into the garage. The children met him at the door.

“Some mean lady came,” Luke said.

“Her wants to send us away,” Karen said.

Keith pulled his thumb from his mouth. “Not like her.”

Dave handed two bags to Megan. He pulled the children into a hug. “You won’t leave me until you’re grown up, except for school, play dates with friends and maybe camp in the summer. In four days we’re going to a new home. You’re mine.” He released them. “Luke, carry the pizzas to the kitchen. I’ll bring the other bags.”

“Okay.”

When they reached the kitchen, Megan unloaded the bags with the twins helping. She sent them to wash their hands before they settled to eat.

When they finished, Megan wrapped the remains in foil. “Lunch for tomorrow.”

The children ran to the living room. Megan handed Dave a list.

“What’s this for?” He studied the paper.

“Things the children will need unless you want to do laundry every two or three days.”

“All this. Didn’t they have clothes from home?”

She nodded. “They brought a few things. I washed them with their new clothes. The old ones are fit for play, not for school.”

He tapped his foot against the floor. “There’s a huge discount store not far from town. We’ll go there tomorrow and check some things off the lists.”

“Sounds good.”

He draped an arm around her shoulders. “Shall we join them?”
