âPoor Justin! You donât look well. I hope you ate at Ãtienneâs and that he took good care of you.â
From the minute she arrived at the station on the Saturday, sheâd been darting worried glances at him.
âHave you been taking your liver medication regularly?â
It dated way back to his time as a teacher when his long battle against Mimoune had begun. Heâd been all the more anxious since he saw no way out other than teaching, and he sensed that he wouldnât be able to cope much longer. His stomach suffered the consequences. Their physician was already Doctor Bosson, who still treated the entire family.
But it wasnât Bosson who had spoken of his liver, it was Dominique.
âDonât you find, Doctor, that he has a delicate liver?â
And since Bosson never contradicted anyone, he had nodded and grunted a vague:
âHe is perhaps a bit â¦â
He had prescribed a powder to be taken on waking and after each main meal. For months, Justin forgot to take it.
âYou need to be careful. Youâre looking sallow again â¦â
It was funny being reunited with them, to see his daughter in a dress, more tanned than when heâd left, and Bib, who suddenly looked like a real little man.
He didnât feel fully in tune with them, while they had a vague sense that something had changed, especially Dominique.
âDid you go out a lot in the evenings?â
âOnce, with Bob.â
âDid you come home late?â
âAt eleven. On the other nights, I was in bed by ten â¦â
âDid Madame Léonard come every day to clean, as I asked her to?â
âI suppose so. I didnât see her, but by the time I got back in the evenings, everything was tidy â¦â
âYou havenât had any trouble at the office?â
âNot at all.â
He had to get used to it, to make a sort of readjustment.
Various trivial events had happened during the week, but he wasnât allowed to talk about them. On the Tuesday, heâd bought La Tribune de Lausanne from a kiosk on the Champs-Ãlysées, had stuffed it in his pocket and gone into a café where, after ordering a drink, heâd gone to skim the newspaper in the toilet.
He couldnât run the risk of being seen reading a Swiss newspaper, he who in his entire life had spent less than three hours in that country and had neither family nor friends there.
In the âValaisâ column there was some news, and his heart began to beat faster.
