Chapter Four

Alex paced the library, groaning and pulling at his hair.

What had happened? How had he ended up on his knees for the vampire? How did the captor end up the captive when Raphael was the one in the cage? He couldn't think for all the blood deserting his brain and pooling in his cock. Oh, God, what had the vampire done to him? He had never felt lust on this scale in his life before.

There was a tap on the door, and Jonathan entered. Before he could speak, the eagerness patent on his face, Alex said,

"Ask Christopher to procure a mattress and bed linen for Raphael. Help him carry it down."

Jonathan's mouth opened a little in astonishment. "What did he do for you that you would think of his comfort this way?"

Alex turned on him furiously, blood heating his cheeks.

"My private affairs are my own private affairs. Know your station and do not dare question me thus!"

Jonathan looked cowed because Alex usually had no need to raise his voice in such a manner, the servant obedient and unquestioning to the extreme. He bowed his head and muttered, "Forgive me," and then hurried from the room before Alex could speak again.

Alex cursed and threw himself into a chair, glaring from the window out over the garden. What was he going to do?

This was not the plan at all.

He went to his club that night and tried to slake his lust with faceless men, but no. Every man had Raphael's face and every hard cock belonged to the vampire. Alex came away trembling and caught a hansom cab home, his hand around himself in the darkness.

He tried to reason with the voice that told him he needed to get to grips with the vampire or he was going to die from desire. He tried to overrule his need, but his urges were not to be denied. He had never wanted anything more in his entire life. He was blind to his own safety.

He descended the stairs almost at a rush, not taking a light with him, not lighting the lamps. He could see well enough when he got into the laboratory. The vampire lay beneath the dark covers on the mattress, one pale shoulder visible, dappled with the moonlight that streamed through the now uncovered window. Alex caught his breath at the vision. He hurried across the floor to the cage on trembling legs, his palms wet, his heart racing.

Raphael's eyes opened as though he sensed who stood there. He turned onto his side to face Alex, and the covers fell to his waist, revealing his chiseled torso, the line of dark hair running down it to his groin. The dressings were gone, and two pale pink scars on shoulder and chest were the only remnants of the bullet wounds.

Alex licked his lips. He put his hands up to the bars, his breeches tight, and for a moment he felt like he was the one on the inside looking out.
