Chapter Fifty-One
The door to Charlotteâs room is closed. Mace knocks.
âCome in.â
He walks inside, carrying another shopping bag from Target.
Charlotteâs pressed against the wall, peering out the window.
âIâm sorry I worried you,â she says.
âWhat was the plan? Sneak out, kill some guy, be home in time for dinner?â
âSomething like that.â Charlotte rubs her eyes with her palms.
âWhat happened? With the man you saw?â
âWe tried to kill each other. I won.â
At her words Mace feels a sense of unease. Almost like nausea.
âHeâs dead?â
âMaybe. I didnât stick around to find out. Iâm sorry, I donât feel well.â Charlotte pushes off the wall and walks to the adjoining bathroom. Mace follows her and stands in the doorway. Heâs surprised that, empty and a year removed, the bathroom is unfamiliar to him. He wonders if the sink was always close to the door, the shower this small.
âHow did you find him?â
âKnew where he works.â Charlotte turns on the water, lets it fill her hands, gently rubs the blood from her cheeks, chin, forehead, lips. She gingerly dabs her face with a towel and leaves the towel damp and red.
âDo you need anything?â Mace asks.
She raises an arm and winces. âMaybe some help getting my shirt off.â
âIâll get Eve.â
Charlotte shakes her head. âI trust you.â
Mace steps in the bathroom. Charlotte leans forward. He pulls her shirt up and over her head and arms. She whimpers a little, but thatâs all.
There are bruises over her stomach. Bruises startling and detailed and they seem like theyâll never fade, as if theyâre etched into her skin. Bruises like a map of pain and anguish; bruises like a watercolor painted by a sadist; bruises like her skin is a brittle shield barely able to protect her soul. He looks at her skin and sees memories of fists and feet and nails and teeth.
Charlotte notices Maceâs stare. But now, unlike when he first saw her face, she doesnât try and hide the marks.
