“Shh, shh,” she whispered. “It’s okay. Did you have a bad dream?

Hush now, it’s okay.”

“No, it’s not!”

“Shh, baby, it’s okay.

“What happened? Lanie, what’s wrong?”

Another face suddenly appeared over him. It was older than Hers and the eyes glistened, but it was a nice face and parts of him knew it, had seen it before. It was like Her but different.

“Is he all right?”

He tried to reach for the older Her , but only managed to strike the bars.

Her laughed.

“See how excited he is? He knows you.”

The older Her leaned closer.

“Do you really think so?” she asked.

Lanie brushed her hand over his face and he wriggled with pleasure. “Of course he does, the doctors don’t know everything, do they, baby?”

He made a cooing sound.

“See, he’s fine, but I bet he’s wet. You know that always bothers him. Let me check.”

Moving quickly, Her reached under the blanket that covered him and slipped two fingers under the leg of the thick padded thing wrapped around his bottom.

“Yup, he’s soaked. Hand me another diaper and a wipe, will you, Helen?”

What happened to me?

His body twitched as Her pulled off the blanket and folded it over the rails at the foot of the bed.

“I thought I’d crochet him a blanket.” The older Her looked away as Her pulled the cold wet thing off him, but didn’t stop talking. “I was thinking two shades of blue might be nice. One light and one dark?”

“That would be great.” Her touched the things between his legs with something cold that made him jump.

“It’s okay, baby, shh, it’s okay,” the older Her said and put her hands on his chest. He could feel them, cold and hard against the thin shirt he wore. “Just be a good boy for Lanie, okay? God, he really hates this.”

“No, he doesn’t,” Her said as she dropped the thick wet thing into something next to the bed that went clunk , “he just hates being wet, is all.”

“My poor boy.” The older Her pressed harder against his chest as he struggled. “I don’t know why you insisted they remove the catheter. It was so much easier that way.”

“You heard what the doctor said, there could be complications with catheters. Besides, I don’t mind doing this for him.”

Her smiled down at him.

“I know it’s cold,” Her told him, “but it will be all over in a minute. Hang in there, okay, buddy? Look out, baby, here comes the snowstorm!”

Her made a funny face and sprinkled something that took away the cold and felt good.

He stopped thrashing.

Thank you.

“See, he’s fine. Okay, lift up,” Her told him, but she didn’t seem to mind when he didn’t. Her just rolled him halfway over to slide a soft warm thing under him then rolled him back and snugged it down. “All done. Now, isn’t that better?”

Yes. He smiled up at Her .

“You’re welcome,” Her said as she pulled the blanket back over him and tucked it in.

“But it’s so much more work for you,” the older Her said.

“No, it’s not.
