WITH THEIR RED STAR Academy uniforms still dripping water on the shiny floor of the Ultazar train, Yalena and Alec drew the attention of every person there. People must have already heard the Fians had attacked, although Yalena couldn’t imagine they would have any concrete details yet.

The train was packed, making her think people had been urged to get home and stay in until the city had been declared safe. Little did they know the only one the Fians were after was Yalena.

Cece squealed the second Alec and Yalena entered their apartment. “Oh, thank goodness, you’re back!”

She hurried to check on Alec first—albeit only for a quick moment—before she embraced Yalena in a tight hug.

“I’m fine, thanks to Alec and the others,” Yalena said. The list of names she wanted to mention was a mile long.

Alec protested as Cece forced them into dry bathrobes, to keep them from shivering, while Ron tried to bring them up to speed.

“The Fians have been forced out. Four of them managed to get down to the service level, though.” He looked at Alec, expecting more details.

“We lost them in the water. Yalena confirmed that it disturbs the vibe,” Alec said.

Yalena’s felt a little queasy. “Has anyone been hurt?”

“A few of your classmates and a few of their people, but the laser beams they used weren’t lethal,” Ron said. “See for yourselves.”

He pointed at the room tablet, where a news reporter repeated a vague version of what happened for the Martian public. Apart from leaving out any possible reason for why the Fians did not want to tour Mars and decided to attack instead, she also didn’t rehash the battle itself and instead focused on reassuring the public that the Fians had left, and the wounded were taken care of.

“They’re going to need you now,” Ron said with a mixture of pride and caution, while squeezing his son’s shoulder.

“I know.”

Alec nodded. He seemed ready for the responsibility. Yalena’s eyes wanted to preserve that image somehow because it showed everything she knew Alec could do for their world—now, more than ever.

“And by the way,” Ron added, “I’m glad to see the glove worked.”
